A 16-year-old girl died in the basement of a home in the southern California city of San Bernardino on Monday after falling from a second-story window of her mother’s home, police said.
The incident was reported at around 6:20 a.m. at the home in an area of the city known for drug and gang activity, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said in a statement.
Police found the girl unconscious in a bedroom, and she was taken to a hospital, where she died, Burguan added.
The girl’s father, who lives at the residence, was arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter and was being held in jail.
He was not immediately available for comment.
Police did not say how long the girl was in the home.
San Bernardino has seen a spike in homicides in recent years, which the police chief attributed to a spike among people who use drugs and gangs.
